One of the most haunting images of the Las Vegas shooting aftermath was a photo of a man who appeared to be protecting a woman on the ground.
It’s not clear if the woman was shot. It was not immediately clear who the two were.
"I don't know if she was injured, but he was very clearly shielding her with his body and protecting her," the photographer, David Becker, told Time. Becker's photos were distributed through Getty Images shortly after the shooting.
The image of the man protecting the woman on the ground was taken at 10:12 p.m., minutes after shots were fired at the Route 91 Harvest country music festival. Jason Aldean was on stage when the shots, which continued for minutes, were fired from an upper floor of Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino.
The death toll was updated Monday afternoon to 59 people and another 527 were injured.
Video of the shooting initially gives the impression that the gunshots were a speaker malfunction. That’s what Becker thought when he initially heard the gunfire, but captured the panic as the crowd started to flee.
This is the full statement Becker gave to CBS News:
