Q: Do they still have the world's fair and when was the last one held?

—Bill Lowery, Cave Spring

A: The most recent world's fair was called Expo 2010 and was held in Shanghai, China, but there hasn't been a world's fair in the United States since the 1984 Louisiana World Exposition in New Orleans, Urso Chappell, who runs ExpoMuseum.com and ExpoBids.com, told Q&A on the News in an email. There have been 11 world's fairs in nine countries since the Louisiana World Exposition, and the next scheduled one is Expo 2012, which will be held in Yeosu, South Korea, starting on May 12. Chappell said it will be smaller than most world's fairs, and the next larger one will be Expo 2015 in Milan, Italy. "The bidding processes for Expo 2017 and Expo 2020 are under way, but no United States city has bid for those," said Chappell, who said he grew up in Stone Mountain. "There is hope that a U.S. city will be for Expo 2022 or Expo 2025. Future bids for a U.S. city are complicated by the fact that the United States pulled out of the international organization that sanctions world's fairs (the Bureau International des Expositions) in 2002."
