A Spalding County 13-year-old is accused of bringing a BB gun that resembled a handgun to school.

The boy, whose name was not released, was taken into custody after the gun was found in his backpack at Cowan Road Middle School in Griffin, Capt. Tony Ranieri with the Spalding County Sheriff's Office said Tuesday. He was charged with possession of a weapon on school grounds and released to his parents, police said.

The school resource officer and teachers were tipped off to the gun Nov. 9 and the student's locker and bag were searched, Ranieri said. The weapon, a CO2-type gun, resembled a 9 mm handgun and could have been mistaken during a confrontation, police said.

"It could've been a deadly incident," Ranieri said.

The boy is expected to face disciplinary action at school and will have to appear in juvenile court, police said.
