Updates to Sandy Springs’ stormwater management policy could require homeowners building room additions, decks, driveways and other improvements to take special steps to reduce runoff and avert stream pollution.

“This is a significant change, and we realize will be added cost and inconvenience to some individual projects,” said Sandy Springs Mayor Rusty Paul. “However, we must do a better job of managing stormwater at the source because new construction is having adverse effects on surrounding neighbors.”

Among the changes: The “trigger point” that would require homeowners to put in special plantings, drains or other measures to address runoff would be reduced from 5,000 square feet to 1,000 square feet of “impervious surface.”

A public hearing on the stormwater update will take place on a date in August yet to be announced.

The changes are needed for the city to adopt Atlanta Regional Commission updates to the Georgia Stormwater Management Manual, also know as the “Blue Book,” city officials said.
