Because of a budget surplus, the Smyrna Community Center will receive a new roof after 25 years.

The Smyrna City Council voted March 19 to pay $1.2 million for the roof replacement.

For $329,500, heating, ventilation and air conditioning units will be replaced at City Hall and the jail.

Also with the surplus as a carryover, $41,019 will be spent to repair a dump truck.

Minus those three expenditures, the remainder is $1,245,074 of the total $2,713,545 surplus from Fiscal Year 2017.

Out of a separate fund, Council also voted to buy a police administration vehicle for $25,553 from Wade Ford in Smyrna to replace a Chevrolet Impala that has been taken out of service.
