A new HAWK signal will be installed in Smyrna. The Smyrna City Council voted Monday to enter into an agreement with the Georgia Department of Transportation for the installation of a state-funded High Intensity Activated Crosswalk signal on South Cobb Drive about 120 feet south of Plaza Drive.

The cost to the state will be between $80,000 to $100,000 for the materials, labor and installation, said City Administrator Tammi Saddler Jones. However, Smyrna will provide repairs, maintenance and minimal electrical usage.

Last year, Georgia DOT conducted a study along the South Cobb Drive corridor and determined that a protected mid-block crossing was needed at this location. The HAWK signal remains dark to keep traffic flowing until the pedestrian button is pushed to activate the signal.
