The Sandy Springs City Council has approved agreements with the FBI to name a police detective to two multi-jurisdictional, metro crime-fighting units.

The Major Offenders Violent Crime Task Forces targets individuals and groups responsible for violent crimes such as mass killings, carjacking, kidnapping and firearms violations, City Manager John McDonough said in reports to the council.

The Child Exploitation Task Force investigates sex crimes against children, identifies and rescues child victims, reduces children’s vulnerability to such crimes, and reduces the negative impact on children of parental rights disputes, McDonough said.

The appointed task force officer would continue to report to the Sandy Springs police chief. The city would pay his or her salary and handle performance appraisals and other personnel matters, while the FBI is authorized to pay overtime.

“This formalizes what we’ve been doing in the past … and allows for overtime compensation,” Police Chief Kenneth DeSimone told the council.
