The Roswell City Council has approved applying for a $10,000 federal grant that would help underwrite the Roswell Youth Theatre’s plan to engage a local performance artist for the 2018 Roswell Roots celebration of black history and culture.

The Challenge America Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts will require a $10,000 local match, according to a staff memo to the Council.

The performance artist would lead young people of the Groveway Community in staging a spoken-word performance, staff said. The city’s Recreation, Parks, Historic and Cultural Affairs Department would be responsible for the project. Matching funds would be drawn from the city’s Grant Match Contingency Fund, which has $271,107 available.

Roswell Roots is held annually in January and February.
