The Roswell City Council has accepted on first reading a measure that would allow the city to designate certain areas for paid, on-street parking.

Roswell has been considering charging for 19 parking spaces on Elizabeth Way and 14 to 18 spaces on Canton Street next to the Heart of Roswell Park in the historic downtown district. Staff recommended that the pay model not apply to handicapped spaces.

The pending ordinance would empower the city to provide, by resolution, “paid on-street parking by any means, public or private that mayor and council deem appropriate and to provide for parking enforcement in the designated areas through civil fines for violation of any parking times established,” according to a staff agenda report.

The measure is to have a second reading at the Monday, July 8, council meeting.
