The Powder Springs City Council voted 3-1 Monday to approve two alcohol licenses - one receiving objections by a next-door tenant.

Councilwoman Nancy Hudson was opposed to both requests.

Henry Lust, owner of The Tutoring Center in the Publix shopping center, stated his opposition to issuing an alcohol license to Monterrey’s restaurant at 3721 New Macland Road due to increased noise levels, including music.

“Even though we are not a school, we do teach,” said Lust of the more than 40 students in K-12 who attend the center that is open from 2:30 to 7:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

City Attorney Richard Calhoun said the city’s alcohol distance prohibition would not apply to a tutoring center as it would to a school or church.

With restaurants in Smyrna, Marietta and Douglasville, Monterrey will occupy the space formerly operated by the Green Tomatoes buffet restaurant.

The other request was by Shahid Khan for Seven Springs Petroleum at 1390 Richard D. Sailors Parkway.
