Police officers and firefighters in Peachtree City will soon get an across-the-board pay adjustment of $2,500, possibly starting in August.

Fire Marshal John Dunlap and Police Chief Janet Moon outlined the need for higher public safety salaries at a special City Council meeting on Tuesday, noting that they have lost officers of both types to federal jobs and other jurisdictions because of the city’s lower wage structure

The city is also concerned about hiring enough new officers to replace those getting ready to retire.

Fayette County and Fayetteville have recently increased public safety salaries, and City Manager Jon Rorie said he wants Peachtree City to be competitive. The council voted 4-0-1 (with Phil Prebor absent) to slightly increase the annual work hours of the officers (based on Fair Labor Standards Act compensation provisions) and give all uniformed safety personnel a $2,500 salary increase.

The impact on the FY2020 budget will be approximately $411,000.
