A McDonough city councilman was arrested overnight for allegedly shooting his son following an argument.

According to Henry County Sheriff’s Office records, Rufus Frank Amis, 64, was booked into the county jail early  Thursday, charged with aggravated assault. He was released Thursday on $35,000 bond.

The GBI was called in to investigate the shooting, which happened around 9 p.m. after an argument between Amis and his 41-year-old son, Orlando Amis, at the family’s home on Phillips Drive in McDonough.

GBI spokesman John Bankhead said the argument “got pretty heated, and the son might have thrown a chair.”

During the altercation, Rufus Amis fired a shot from a 9mm handgun into the ceiling, Bankhead said.

Orlando Amis left the house and was outside when Rufus Amis “got his shotgun and fired a couple of times with the shotgun,” Bankhead said.

“Apparently, he hit his son with birdshot in the back,” Bankhead said. “It was a good distance away. We don’t even know if he saw the son.”

Orlando Amis was taken to Atlanta Medical Center in stable condition. “According to agents, he was alert last night,” Bankhead said Thursday.

He said McDonough police had been called during the argument, and officers were nearly to the house when they heard the two shots from the shotgun.

According to the city’s website, Amis is in his first term as an at-large councilman.
