The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced that as of Wednesday, Jan. 1, it is discontinuing the Volunteer Clearinghouse, one of two websites that lists volunteer opportunities at recreation areas managed by the corps.

According to the announcement on corps Facebook pages for Allatoona Lake and the South Atlantic Division, future volunteer opportunities at USACE-managed recreation areas will be posted only to the federal interagency website, www.volunteer.gov

The decision presumably affects the seven corps-managed lakes in Georgia, including Allatoona Lake and Lake Lanier.

While the corps has been posting to two websites for the last 17 years, “The volunteer.gov website provides enhanced cyber security, modern collection and management of volunteer data, and first-rate engagement with volunteers,” said Heather Burke, USACE national partnership and volunteer program manager.

The volunteer.gov website is used by the 10 major federal land-management agencies, officials said. Information: 1-800-VOL-TEER (865-8337) or e-mail volunteer.gov@usace.army.mil or https://bit.ly/2ZibqU9
