Term limits will come to Johns Creek city government in 2020, if the Georgia Legislature goes along with the City Council’s request to amend the city’s charter.
The council approved a resolution seeking to have state Rep. Brad Raffensperger, R-Johns Creek, introduce in the 2018 session of the General Asembly special legislation to limit the terms of mayor and council members to no more than two, consecutive, four-year terms, not including any partial terms of office.
The measure takes effect with the general municipal election of 2019, according to the resolution. No terms of office served as mayor or council member prior to Jan. 1, 2020 will go toward determining if a person has served more than two consecutive terms.
Johns Creek was incorporated in 2006, and its charter did not provide for term limits.
