A man pretending to be a police officer tried to force his way into a Georgia Tech student’s home just north of campus early Wednesday, Atlanta police said.
Atlanta police Sgt. Curtis Davenport told the AJC that the student, whose name has not been released, told officers that a male wearing a black shirt with “police” across the front came to the door of her home on Hampton Street about 2 a.m.
“The suspect said, ‘Police, let me in,'" Davenport said.
When the woman opened the door, she “observed the person with a firearm in hand point it at her as he attempted to make his way inside the residence,” Davenport said. “The resident forced the door closed and locked it.”
Davenport said the suspect then left the home without further incident.
The attempted break-in was the second time this month that a Georgia Tech student has been targeted by a gunman in the Home Park neighborhood.
Georgia Tech police reported that just before 11 p.m. on April 9, a student was walking near Richards and Mecaslin streets when he “heard someone running toward him from behind.”
“When the victim turned around, two males were pointing handguns at him,” Tech police said in a crime alert. “The males stole the victim’s belongings and were last seen running northbound on Mecaslin Street.”
The victim was not injured.
Both suspects were black and in their 20s, police said. One was about 5 feet, 8 inches tall, weighed about 160 pounds and was wearing a red hooded jacket. The second suspect had an athletic build and was wearing a blue t-shirt and black pants.
