In an effort to streamline tax collection and account for some recent changes in state law, the Duluth will consider a new resolution for collection of city taxes at its council meeting March 14.
In 1981 a resolution was adopted making taxes due on Dec. 31. In 2004, the due date was changed to Nov. 30. The proposed new due date would be Dec. 15.
Reasons for the change include House Bill 202 allowing the county tax commissioner to submit the digest to the Revenue Commissioner by Sept. 1, instead of Aug. 1. While Gwinnett has indicated they plan to maintain the same timeframe, should they choose a later submission, Duluth would not be able to bill out by Sept. 1st as they have in the past.
A new due date also interferes less with office closure for Thanksgiving.
In addition, changes to the tax code would include a clarification of the minimum amount billed for personal property, change the date interest and penalties will be charged on delinquent accounts, and back up collection dates by one month.
