The Cherokee County Historical Society has launched a fundraising campaign to save two historic Canton buildings from demolition.

The Cherokee school board had planned to tear down former grammar school and cotton mill office buildings to construct a school district headquarters on the site, but shelved those plans after a public outcry.

The board is expected to take up the issue again on March 19 and will consider several options, including weighing expected bids to buy the property. Board members may also consider a land swap with the city of Canton, or incorporating the buildings into its administrative complex plans.

The society had made a $300,000 bid on the properties to the school district in February.
