Water service has been disconnected at a hotel with a history of nonpayment.

Economy Inn, 2565 Wesley Chapel Road, owed DeKalb County approximately $209,000 for outstanding water bills.

“We are working diligently to meet the challenge of dilapidated hotels in our communities by taking on the worst offenders,” DeKalb Interim CEO Lee May said. “Addressing long-term, unpaid water bills is one means we have to accomplish this.”

Economy Inn was one of three hotels with a combined $400,000 in outstanding bills and a history of code enforcement complaints and court fines. The businesses were initially given until Sept. 23 to address their outstanding balances to avoid a termination of water service.

Two businesses, Budget (A2B) Hotel and Affordable Hotel, worked with the county to pay their bills.

Extensions were given to Economy Inn, allowing its owner the opportunity to pay 50 percent of the balance and make a pay arrangement for the remainder.

A plan is in place to relocate families affected by the water service disconnection in the event of any long-term or permanent closures. The plan includes providing immediate assistance to eligible families with children to enable them to move to safe, affordable housing.
