City Schools Decatur opened Monday with not only a record K-12 enrollment of roughly 5,000 students, but new buildings on the district’s two most prominent campuses.
The new Renfroe Middle School wing, on the campus’s northwest corner and featuring 14 classrooms, is completed and was in use Monday.
The new Decatur High building, behind the existing school and next to the football stadium, probably won’t completely finish and open for use until after the September fall break. This includes a new kitchen/cafeteria, six science labs and eight general classrooms.
Still to come is converting the old kitchen/cafeteria into a band suite and additional classrooms. According to Jeff Prine, program manager for CSD construction, this should finish either the end of October or early November.
