Twenty months ago Decatur Mayor Jim Baskett didn’t think City Schools Decatur’s General Obligation Bond had any chance of passing voter approval. He’s definitely changed his mind, though he’s still cautious regarding the amount.

“I don’t see any reason not to put [the GO Bond] on [the November] ballot,” Baskett said Monday night.

The school board will hold a joint meeting with city commissioners on Monday. Last week the board agreed to ask commissioners for a $75 million bond, down from the $82 million it had considered in February.

“I think voters would approve a $60-$65 million bond,” Baskett said. “I don’t think they’d approve $82 million. As for $75 million, I just don’t know.”

There is still no date set for when commissioners will vote on the bond, though City Manager Peggy Merriss said approval could come as late as early August and still get on the ballot.
