Clayton County District Attorney Tracy Graham Lawson says she plans to retire at the end of July.

Lawson, who has held the office since 2008, told WSB-TV reporter Mark Winne on Wednesday that she plans to step down because she felt the time was right.

“My heart, my spirit tell me it’s time to go,” Lawson told Winne, adding that Chief Assistant District Attorney John Fowler will fill in as acting D.A. until Gov. Brian Kemp names her replacement

“The office is in great shape,” she said. “I just feel like a fresh set of eyes may even propel the office even further forward than we have.”

Lawson, who was named Georgia district attorney of the year, last won re-election to a four-year term in 2016.

Lawson said she thinks Clayton Solicitor General Tasha Mosley should replace her.

“She’s a prosecutor’s prosecutor,” told Winne. “She’s well-liked by other prosecutors and the citizens here in Clayton County who trust her.”
