Continuing its efforts to sign formal lease agreements for various rural and community fire houses used by Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services, the county Board of Commissioners has officially leased the property housing Fire Station 13 from Sutallee Fire Department Inc.

“The agreement is to officially provide clarity on responsibilities and authorization to continue to provide fire suppression services from that location to the surrounding area until a new replacement station is constructed,” Cherokee Fire Chief Tim Prather said in a report to commissioners.

According to the lease agreement, the county will pay $1 a year to lease the fire station at 2833 Knox Bridge Highway, west of Canton, from Sutallee, a volunteer fire department. The station will be operated “under the control and leadership” of Cherokee Fire and Emergency Services. The county also will be responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the property.

The lease runs through Jan. 31, 2019, and will automatically renew for five successive one-year terms.
