Cherokee County has hired an architect for the renovation of the former City Club of Canton as the the backup E911 center and the County Marshal’s and Coroner’s offices.

KRH Architects Inc. of Dalton will be paid a fee equal to 5.5 percent of construction costs, according to the professional services agreement approved recently by the Cherokee Board of Commissioners. The project’s budget is $1.6 million.

Cherokee purchased the City Club to be an employee wellness/recreational facility, but decided against that plan when it got the estimate for the annual cost of operations. Also, officials believe it’s better to have a permanent E911 backup site for disaster situations than a temporary one, County Manager Jerry Cooper said.

The move of the marshal’s office frees up its current space for the state Child Enforcement Recovery office, which has to move from its present quarters in a building recently purchased by Universal Alloy Corp. “That will generate about $50,000-plus a year in rental payments (to the county) from the state,” Cooper told commissioners.
