Former President Jimmy Carter will be Georgia State University's commencement speaker, the university announced Tuesday.

The ceremony will be held at 2 p.m. May 7 at the Georgia Dome. It is open to the public.

Carter, who received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002, has written several books and founded the Carter Center, a nonpartisan and nonprofit group focused on national and international public policy issues.

"Carter’s leadership on a variety of global issues, his passion for education and his devotion to Atlanta and Georgia make him an excellent choice to provide wisdom and guidance to our graduates," President Mark Becker said in a statement.
