One day after Mayor Pro Tem Kecia Cunningham announced she wouldn’t seek re-election to Decatur’s city commission, Brian J. Smith said Monday night that he would run for her District 2 seat. Smith, who says his professional background is in corporate finance, has served on the city’s Zoning Board of Appeals, the Executive Committee of the Decatur Business Association and the Winnona Park Neighborhood Association.

“I want to protect,” Smith wrote, “the vibrancy and diversity we love in a time of rapid growth and change … [which requires] careful planning for the inevitable growth and development.”

Smith becomes the second person announcing his candidacy. Two weeks ago former commissioner John Ridley said he is running for Mayor Jim Baskett’s at-large seat. A retired technology consultant, Ridley previously served on the commission from 1998-2002.

Of the three commissioners up for re-election this year, only Scott Drake (elected in 2013) is running again.
