The Berkeley Lake City Council heard the first read recently of a proposed new ordinance that would prohibit certain activities within city park property.

Specifically, the new ordinance would prohibit smoking, domestic pets where indicated by posted signage, use of the driveway and parking surfaces for recreational purposes, and use of the park after dark, except for city events.

According to city documents, the purpose of the new ordinance “is to curb undesirable and unhealthy activities that we have observed over time in the park and playground here at city hall and provide a legal basis for intervention and enforcement where warranted in the future. It will establish better protections of the health, safety and general welfare of the toddlers and young children for whom the playground is intended by maintaining cleanliness and limiting exposure to second-hand smoke.”

City Council will revisit the issue next month providing opportunity for public comments prior to voting on the ordinance.
