Avondale Estates has hired an engineering firm to conduct a road drainage study of the 48-acre Clarendon Avenue area, which saw extensive flooding during the heavy rains that fell in November and December.
The study area runs along Clarendon, south of North Avondale Road, then tilts west, crossing Clarendon towards the vicinity of Willis Park.
“We got a lot of complaints about back yards flooding,” said Mayor Pro Tem Terry Giager. “We need to determine if this atypical, or if its part of a 25-year flood, or a 50-year or flood, or what it is.”
The city received 12 inches rainfall in December, the single wettest month on record dating to the 1890s, while November was the fourth wettest month on record.
A similar study concluded that the Kensington Road area, about a quarter mile east of Clarendon, doesn’t have adequate capacity to accommodate 25-year storms, much less more severe rainfall. The city is considering a portion of the lower parking lot of First Baptist Church Avondale Estates as a possible site for a storm retention pond.
