For the third time this week, firefighters battled a blaze in the same area Sunday morning in northwest Atlanta.

The brush fires have popped up in a green space between Azlee Place and Jones Road, about 100 feet behind several homes. Firefighters have been able to stop the fires from spreading to any houses.

But officials told Channel 2 Action News the fires appear to have been intentionally set.

“(The fires) take all these units in this area out of service for hours and hours as we try to eliminate all the hot spots to keep it from rekindling,” said Chief Douglas Hatcher with the Atlanta Fire Department.

It is costing the city about $500 an hour to fight the blazes with three trucks and four fire engines in use, Hatcher said.

The latest call reporting fire in the area came in around 6:15 a.m. Sunday from nearby homeowners who smelled the smoke. Firefighters extinguished fires in the same area Saturday evening and Thursday.
