A contract providing for license plate readers to identify wanted motor vehicles and help police apprehend criminal suspects has been approved by the Alpharetta City Council.

The council approved a $67,320-a-year contract with Georgia Power to place the SiteView readers at strategic locations around the city. Three locations are planned in the 2020 fiscal year, according to a staff report to the council.

The contract includes cameras, mounting hardware, power connections, communications hardware, maintenance and access to a Vigilant License Plate Reader database, staff said.

“The program will allow for the detection and apprehension of wanted vehicles and persons, traffic violators, and suspects involved in serious crimes including burglaries, entering autos, and other serious crimes,” staff said.

Data will be collected to track suspicious persons and vehicles identified, arrests made and crimes solved as a result of the cameras.
