1. The DeKalb County Commission approved a proposal in March that changes DeKalb trash pickup from twice a week to once a week, a transition that began July 6. Recyclables and yard trimmings will also be collected weekly at the same time as solid waste.
2. The transition covers residents of Brookhaven, Dunwoody, Lithonia and residents of unincorporated DeKalb.
3. Without the change, DeKalb County residents could have faced a fee increase from the previous amount of $268 per year. The change is also predicted to save the county more than $5 million annually, largely due to a reduction of about 30 garbage trucks, which cost more than $250,000 each and get only about two miles per gallon. The move is getting some mixed reactions on social media.
4. One of the key steps in the transition to one-day-per-week garbage collection is the delivery of green 65-gallon trash bins to homeowners, which will be completed in the next couple of weeks. Delivery for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday customers has already been completed and delivery for Thursday customers is scheduled to be completed by this weekend. Roll cart delivery to residents in townhome and condominiums will begin in September.
5. Residents will not be able to use their old garbage containers once all of the 65-gallon trash carts have been delivered.
