Calling a project that would bring movie studios, office space, a college and housing to an industrial area of Jimmy Carter Boulevard "an economic stimulus as well as a job creator," Gwinnett County planning commissioners recommended approval Tuesday for a redevelopment project known as the Atlanta Media Campus.
“It’s the kind of development that’s good for the county,” said Don Shillington, the vice chairman of the commission. “I’m excited to see it come.”
The development, which is slated to be voted on by county commissioners later this month, would bring seven sound stages to a campus where OFS manufactures fiber optic cables. The company will continue to operate on the site.
Michael Sullivan, an attorney representing the developer, Jacoby, called the project “the catalyst redevelopment we’ve been wishing for for over a decade.” Success at the Atlanta Media Campus, he said, will begin the process of redevelopment in that area. At buildout, in a decade, the $926.4 million project is supposed to bring in more than $15.2 million in annual property tax, the developer said.
“It’s a massive, transformative project,” Sullivan said. “This is a big move. Gwinnett needs a big move.”
Planning commissioners discussed the possibility of transit at the site, and road improvements are required as conditions of the redevelopment.
