Two new bills in the General Assembly would give Druid Hills and South Fulton residents a chance to vote on whether to annex into the City of Atlanta – and perhaps undermine efforts to create new cities.

House Bill 586 would set a vote on the Druid Hills annexation for November. House Bill 587 would set a similar vote for Sandtown and other areas in South Fulton.

Critics see the move as an effort to undermine proposals to create new cities in DeKalb and Fulton counties. For example, residents in South Fulton would also vote on forming a new city under House Bill 514. Under the bill, the boundaries for the proposed City of South Fulton would be set 90 days before the November vote.

Both annexation bills were assigned to the House Intergovernmental Coordination Committee Wednesday.
