A college instructor warns there may be an unintended consequence of the bill allowing guns on college campuses — fewer high school students signing up for college courses through Georgia’s growing Move On When Ready dual enrollment program
The state House voted Monday to legalize carrying concealed guns on Georgia's college campuses. House Bill 859 now moves to the state Senate for its consideration.
Having worked with families considering dual enrollment, Rick Diguette says parents are already often leery of sending a teen to a college campus for classes. The possibility now of high school students sitting alongside older and armed college students may increase their anxiety.
“Knowing that some classmates and/or professors have armed themselves suggests, at least subliminally, that a violent attack is always a clear and present danger. It also suggests that the trained security personnel employed by the college are inadequately prepared to deal with emergencies,” said Diguette.
