Atlanta high schools posted some of the lowest ACT scores in the region, according to new score reports released today.
Just two Atlanta high schools — North Atlanta and Grady — had average composite scores for the Class of 2016 above the state average. North Atlanta and Grady also had the most students take the ACT of any Atlanta high school.
No Atlanta school ranked in the top 25 regionally.
A dozen ranked in the bottom 25 regionally.
The performance gap between Atlanta Public Schools and the state has narrowed slightly over the past five years, even as more students take the ACT.
The scores released today don’t take into account how many students at each school participated in the standardized test. Higher participation rates can mean lower average scores.
Statewide, Georgia students showed improvement on the ACT in 2016. Georgia's average composite score of 21.1 was higher, for the first time, than the national average. And Georgia students outscored students nationally in English, reading, and science as well, and scored the same as the national average in mathematics.
