When Markevius Kemp joined other black men escorting their children to the first day of classes at Flat Shoals Elementary School, a photo of a moment with his sons drew attention and praise on social media.

He was just doing what he always does, he says. It’s not easy, though. He’s a single father with custody of his two young boys.

“It’s been a struggle, but I need to be there for my kids,” Kemp says. “No matter what.”
