3 from superintendent’s former district join DeKalb Schools

DeKalb County School District Superintendent Steve Green introduced five new hires he said are critical to streamlining efforts to ensure student success in the district.

Three of those five introduced Monday night at the end of the monthly Board of Education meeting had ties to his previous job with the Kansas City Public Schools.

Green introduced:

•Leo Brown, the senior manager of operations at Emory University’s hospital and previously human capital officer for KCPS, becomes the district’s interim human capital officer.

•Manomay Malathip, KCPS’ director of graduation and postsecondary research, will become the interim executive director of student advancement, the division of student support and intervention.

•Eileen Houston-Stewart, currently chief communications and community engagement officer at KCPS, becomes interim chief communications and community relations officer in the office of communications.

•Oliver Lewis, currently the director of professional learning, becomes executive director of professional learning, leadership development and STEM program and the division of curriculum and instruction.

•Jennifer Hackemeyer, general counsel for the Georgia Department of Education, becomes to chief legal officer in the department of legal affairs.

Brown's hiring was announced in December, when word came that several longtime administrators would be shuffled to new jobs in the reorganization.

Green was optimistic Monday night about the reorganization and his latest hires.

“They will help intensify and strengthen our efforts of getting better,” he said.

The board also voted early during the day to make member Michael Erwin vice chair. Jim McMahan held the role in 2015. Board Chairman Melvin Johnson retained his post, as he was the only nominee.
