The state’s public colleges and universities enrolled about 3,500 more students this fall, a modest increase reversing two years of enrollment declines.

Fall 2014 enrollment for University System of Georgia’s 31 institutions reached 312,936 students, a 1.1 percent increase over last fall.

“While our fall 2014 enrollment is encouraging, we still have much work ahead,” said Chancellor Hank Huckaby, said in a statement on Friday. “We must stay focused on our Complete College Georgia initiative, continue to recruit and retain students, and fully support them through their completion of college.”

Enrollment is tied to how the state funds the university system. Fewer students enrolled mean fewer dollars for the institutions.

Last year’s enrollment decline resulted in about a $20 decrease in what the Board of Regents, the system’s governing board, was allowed to request in state funding.

Eighteen USG institutions saw enrollment increases this fall, while 13 institutions — including Georgia Regents and Clayton State universities, as well as, and Georgia Highlands College — saw enrollment drop off this year.
