Just over half DeKalb County’s high schools received advanced placement honors from the state Department of Education, officials announced Thursday.

Twelve of the district’s 21 high schools were recognized in at least one of six categories. According to a release from the state Department of Education, 272 Georgia schools were honored.

Across the state, honor schools recognized included:

•61 AP Challenge Schools, those with fewer than 900 students and students testing in the four core areas

•49 AP Access and Support Schools, where at least 30 percent of the AP exams weer taken by black or Hispanic students and 30 percent of students passed with a 3 or higher

•61 AP Merit Schools, with 20 percent of the school taking AP exams and with 50 percent of those testing 3 or higher

•199 AP STEM Schools, with students testing into at least two math and science courses

•127 AP STEM Achievement Schools, and with 40 percent of the exam scores 3 or higher

•125 AP Humanities Schools, where students test into at least one ELA course, two social science, one fine arts and one world language course

In DeKalb, the following schools were honored:

•Challenge: Elizabeth Andrews High School

•Access and Support: DeKalb Early College Academy, DeKalb School of the Arts, Southwest DeKalb High School

•Merit: DeKalb School of the Arts, Dunwoody High School, Lakeside High School

•Humanities: Cross Keys High School, Chamblee Charter High School, Clarkston High School, Druid Hills High School, Dunwoody High School, Lakeside High School, Lithonia High School

•STEM: Arabia Mountain High School, Chamblee Charter High School, Clarkston High School, Druid Hills High School, Lakeside High School, Southwest DeKalb High School

•STEM Achievement: Chamblee Charter High School
