Cobb school officials are expected to hire close to 100 educators before school starts next month.

Georgia’s second-largest education system should be fully staffed by the beginning of school on Aug. 3, according to deputy superintendent John Adams, who spoke at a school board meeting Wednesday. He said the district is about “99 percent” staffed, with nearly 100 more educators projected to be hired.

All told, the district is looking to hire about 700 teachers for the next school year, including 100 new teachers.

School board members recently approved a budget for next school year, which includes raises for teachers and other employees. Superintendent Chris Ragsdale's recommended nearly $945 million budget includes a 4 percent raise for all employees.

In June, the school board also voted to approve up to $3 million to hire more teachers and support personnel, if needed, during the next academic year. School leaders say employing more teachers and other staff members may be necessary if student growth projections are larger than expected.

The $3 million allocated for possibly hiring additional educators next school year would come out of the school system’s general fund. School leaders project they could hire up to 50 educators with the money. The budget is based on a predicted enrollment of 111,751 students.
