A recount in the election for DeKalb County school board District 5 did not change the outcome, though the leader’s margin fell by three votes.

Incumbent Thad Mayfield still gathered the highest tally after officials reduced his total Thursday after discovering errors in the count of absentee ballots, said election chief H. Maxine Daniels. She said a scanner may have misread the ballots.

Vickie Turner remains in second place and will contest Mayfield in a July 22 runoff election. The recount was requested by third place candidate and former incumbent Jesse “Jay” Cunningham, who got 74 fewer votes than Turner, and is now officially out of the running.
