Brasfield & Gorrie

By Melanie Watson

Brasfield & Gorrie, one of the largest privately held construction firms in the nation, is looking to fill nearly 75 jobs in Georgia by the end of September. The company, which has Georgia offices in Atlanta and Columbus, is booming due to the fact that more companies are relocating to the state. The companies bring the need for more headquarters and offices, which then creates a need for more residential construction.

Brasfield & Gorrie’s jobs range from project managers and superintendents to estimators, support staff and skilled craftsmen. Region 1 President Rob Taylor discussed the opportunities, skills the company is seeking and benefits.

Q: How many jobs do you have available?

A: Right now we're looking at somewhere around 10 to 15 salaried employees and maybe 60 field employees. I expect that number to increase anywhere from five to 15 percent between now and the end of the third quarter.

Q: What type of education are you seeking from candidates?

A: For our management or operations positions, we are seeking someone with a Bachelor of Science degree in construction, engineering, or a related field. If we're hiring for our accounting or marketing departments, then we'd like to see degrees in those fields. For field jobs, we're just looking for a high school education or a degree from a technical school.

Q: What type of skills would you like to see in candidates?

A: Whatever your trade is, you need to have some strong technical skills in that area. We also want to see a high level of passion and a strong work ethic. Problem-solving skills and a can-do attitude are huge.

Q: What kind of perks do you provide your employees?

A: We offer a great health plan. The company pays over 75 percent of premiums. We have a wellness program with an onsite gym and personal trainers, massage therapy and fitness classes throughout the day. We have a chiropractor on staff and a director of personal development who offers counseling services for both business and personal matters.

Q: Why should someone be interested in working for Brasfield & Gorrie?

A: We've been in this market for 30 years and the reason we're successful is because we treat people as the most important part of our business. Yes, we build facilities but we focus on building good quality people who are an asset to their employer, their community, and their families. If we do that, then the buildings will take care of themselves. The average tenure at our company is 12 years. We hire people in the early phase of their career and grow them from a business and personal perspective. We look to create a family, not a company.
