Tommy Kim, an eighth grader at Immaculate Heart of Mary School, has received a 2014 Jack Kent Cooke Young Scholar award. More than 1,000 high achieving 7th grade students nationwide applied for this scholarship, which supports students from 7th grade through graduate school who have a breadth of interests, work hard, demonstrate a strong will to succeed, and have financial need. As a Young Scholar, Tommy will receive academic advising and financial support during his high school career with possibilities of college scholarships. He a member of the National Junior Honor Society, the Pride of the Eagles Advanced Band, the Lector Ministry, the Boy Scouts, the St. Pius Youth Honor Band, the IHM Math Team, the IHM Basketball Team and the Korean Martyrs Catholic Church Altar Server Ministry. He participates in the Fernbank Fun Volunteer Program and the John's Hopkins Center for Talented Youth Summer Camp. He is the 1st chair percussionist in the Georgia Music Educators Association District Honor Band. As a 7th grader, Tommy scored a 2030 on the SAT.

Students from 17 metro Atlanta schools came together recently at Fulton County's Westlake High School to pack meals to feed a million children in need. The project involves students in 11 states. Students in Atlanta, DeKalb, Fayette and Fulton joined in the effort. The Chick-fil-A foundation donated financial support to the project. Other students in metro Atlanta will hold similar efforts in the coming weeks. All of the meals packed will be donated to children in need in metro Atlanta.

Thanks to a Delta Airline pilot, who is married to a Fayette County School nurse, school clinics across the county now have extra blankets to comfort ill visitors. Stan Hill's wife, Cindy Hill, an RN at Fayette County High School, mentioned that she was looking for supplies for the school's clinic. Stan Hill knew Delta had some blankets formerly used on flights that could be donated. Delta's Marshall Resnik, manager of Catering Assets, loaded 100 retired red blankets into his car and personally delivered the blankets to Cindy Hill.

Walton High School Latin students Ariana "Tali" Higgins, Mallika Balakrishnan and Abhi Nathan are recent winners of the Medusa Mythology Exam Committee's 2014 Achievement Award Program. Tali won the Apollo Award (with a cash prize of $550) and Mallika and Abhi won the Musa Award ($100). Alan Farnsworth is their teacher at the Cobb County school. The students won three of six awards given nationally and internationally. Overall scores included essay points, teacher recommendation and the Medusa test score.

Alden Annis, a third-grader at Shelton Elementary School in Paulding County, was awarded $15,000 for his Path2College 529 Plan. Alden is this year's winner of the 25,000 Reasons to Save sweepstakes. The sweepstakes is conducted to raise awareness about the need to save for college. More than 15,000 entries were received statewide. His school was also awarded $10,000, which they will use to improve school facilities, said principal Jeffrey Robinson.

Taylor Howell, a senior at Sandy Creek High School in Fayette County, was the overall winner in the third annual Morehouse Math Boot Camp. Phaidra Buchanan, a sophmore at the school, won the overall award in both the eighth- and ninth-grade competitions. She has won overall awards in the competition for the last two years. Flat Rock student Andy Huynh took first place honors in the eighth grade competition and Sandy Creek student Preston Earle earned the first place award for seniors. Flat Rock's math team coach Monique Williams and math teacher Monica Reckley have been taking students to the competition for three years. Approximately 80 students in the tournament answered 100 multiple-choice questions covering math concepts from pre-algebra to calculus.
