Best in Class for Oct. 5

Justyn Davis of Fayette County High School has been selected to be a member of the 2013 U.S. Army All-American Marching Band. Davis will join an elite group of musicians who will perform during halftime of the U.S. Army All-American Bowl at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.    The U.S. Army All-American Marching Band recognizes the top 125 high school senior marching musicians and color guard members from across the country. The game will be televised live on NBC on Jan. 5.

The Academic Team at Gwinnett's Trickum Middle School earned first place in the 2012 Junior National Academic Championship Tournament. The Trickum Middle team bested 47 squads from across the nation. The team qualified for the national tournament by winning first place — out of 60 teams — at the Georgia Academic Team Association state finals and placing second out of 133 teams in the Professional Association of Georgia Educators-sponsored state finals. The team competitions resemble the game show "Jeopardy." Questions cover geography, science, math, language arts, art, history, music, literature, sports, spelling and current events. Winning team members are: eighth graders Brent Bessemer, Keaton Law, Jordan Rice and Julie Wang; seventh grader Jason Fan; and sixth grader Ansel Ahabue. Their teacher-coaches are Linda LaPerre and Cary Sell. This is the 14th year Trickum Middle has had an Academic Team.

Eight-year-old Ashton Royals of Griffin has been awarded a top 20 finalist spot in the Gerber Life College Scholarship contest and is now in the running to win $20,000. Gerber Life awarded Ashton a $100 gift card and An Awesome Book! by Dallas Clayton, for being a finalist. Ashton shared his vision of one day becoming a baseball player. The contest drew over 26,000 votes on Facebook. The contest was launched in August with the goal of bringing awareness about saving for college at an early age. Parents were asked to submit their child's drawing of what they want to be when they grow up.
