Delta Community Credit Union, has announced the recipients of its Philanthropic Fund and has pledged to donate $70,000 to 15 organizations in metro Atlanta. Some of these recipients include the Atlanta Community Food Bank, Rocky Mountain Elementary School and the Brain Tumor Foundation, along with many others. The grants range from $500 to $10,000, and will be distributed throughout 2014, beginning in January.

The Forsyth County Slugfest board has announced plans to award as many as six students up to $1,000 each in scholarships for the Fall 2014 term. The financial grants will be awarded to help assist students with their unmet educations expenses such as tuition, books and supplies. The scholarships will be awarded to college students who reside in Forsyth County, with special consideration for the ones who have participated in the Forsyth County Slugfest baseball tournament or the county’s parks and recreation baseball or softball programs.

Kathleen Petka's art students at Walton High School have been named the grand prize winners of the national "Water Is Life" classroom mural contest by the Wyland Foundation, which helps children and families rediscover the importance of healthy oceans and waterways through public art programs. The contest took place Oct. 21 - Nov. 21, drawing more than 9,000 students across 45 states. Participating students painted 50 square-foot murals depicting the range of habitats and uses for water throughout the United States. Over 35 students from Walton worked on the mural.

Nine fashion students from the Savannah College of Art and Design have been named YMA Fashion Scholars for 2014, marking the seventh consecutive year that SCAD students have been named. The YMA Fashion Scholarship Fund is a national non-profit association committed to recruiting, nurturing and cultivating the best students from its member schools, helping them become leaders in the fashion industry. All nine students were honored at a scholarship dinner at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City on Jan. 8, and SCAD had the largest delegation of students in attendance.

Richards Middle School's physical education teacher Ron Hickman was one of 16 educators statewide to be honored with the Atlanta Falcons Symetra Heroes of the Classroom Award. He was nominated by Falcons player Jonathan Massaquoi, who is Hickman's former student. Hickman was recognized on Dec. 17 on the sidelines of a Falcons game, and Richards Middle received a check for $1000 in his honor.

Kenneth Mims, a physical science teacher at Snellville Middle School in Gwinnett County, has been selected as a Hope Street Group 2014 National Teacher Fellow. He is one of 13 educators nationwide to be invited to participate in the fellowship program, and is this year's representative from Georgia. In addition to his work at Snellville Middle, Mims is the president of the Nexus Academy of Atlanta and served as a KIPP Founding Teacher for the Freedom Academy Charter School.
