An independent audit found DeKalb County Schools was more fiscally sound than even its officials figured, ending the 2014 fiscal year with a $50.2 million fund balance.
The district had reported a $21 million fund balance at the end of that year. Monday, DeKalb schools Chief Financial Officer Michael Bell said the fund balance for the fiscal year just ended, 2015, was estimated at 92.8 million, up from an expected $80 million figure reported earlier.
The independent auditor’s report was released by the Georgia Department of Audits and Accounts. The finding is a long way from the $14 million deficit the district was managing in 2012.
Michael Thurmond took over as superintendent in the middle of the 2012-2013 year and ended that year with a $20 million surplus. He stepped down at the end of the 2014-2015 school year.
“In partnership with the Board of Education and with better management of resources, we have been able to be good stewards,” DeKalb County School District Superintendent Steve Green said in a statement about the fund balance. “We will continue to be frugal, focused and faithful in our efforts improve student outcomes in academic growth and achievement.”
