The Los Angeles school board may be interested in Atlanta school superintendent Meria Carstarphen, but she’s not so into L.A.

Carstarphen, who came to Atlanta just last year, was being considered as a potential candidate for the superintendent's position in Los Angeles, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Los Angeles' current superintendent, 83-year old Ramon Cortines, has said he wants to retire by the end of the year. Cortines replaced previous superintendent John Deasy, who resigned under pressure last year.

The Los Angeles schools face a host of problems, including a budget shortfall, declining enrollment and low student achievement.

"There is no way I would go to Los Angeles. It's a total mess," one former superintendent told the Los Angeles Times.

Carstarphen told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution she had been approached about the Los Angeles job, but said she wasn’t interested.

“I told them that I’m here in Atlanta in a superintendent position,” she said, leading a district which by Carstarphen’s own account has messes of its own.
