Members of the Atlanta Board of Education and school district staff will march together in the 2015 Atlanta Pride Parade this weekend.

Board member Leslie Grant organized the board’s participation to highlight the Anti-Defamation League’s “No Place for Hate” programming in Atlanta schools.

Real estate agent Rob Smith paid the entry fee.

“Many of our students face very stressful situations every day and could use a show of support for tolerance and diversity from APS leadership,” Grant said.

“Anyone in the APS family is welcome to join us.”

Elected officials — including school board members — commonly march in the Pride Parade. Groups from local colleges and universities participate too.

This year’s participants include Emory University, the Georgia Tech Pride Alliance and Kennesaw State University.

It’s less common to see K-12 groups marching.

However, this year Cobb County high school teacher Stefanie Blackmon, founder of the Hillgrove High School LGBTQ+ club, will serve as a grand marshal.

Cox Enterprises, owner of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, is a corporate sponsor of the Atlanta Pride Festival.
