The Kindezi School, a west side charter school sponsored by Atlanta Public Schools, has received approval to expand to a second site in the Old Fourth Ward.

On Monday, the Atlanta school board renewed the Kindezi School’s charter for five years and gave it permission to expand.

The school will likely expand into the former C.W. Hill Elementary School in the Old Fourth Ward, which is currently occupied by the Intown Academy charter school, according to school officials. The APS board voted last month to end Intown Academy's charter, which means the school will likely close at the end of this year.

In the recommendation to approve Kindezi's renewal and expansion, APS cited the possible opportunity to provide a "strong option" for former Intown Academy students.

The recommendation also cited the success of the Kindezi model, which includes class sizes of about six to eight students, and the school’s strong academic results, organizational stability and knowledgeable board.
