School bus drivers in DeKalb County, saying they are tired of the low pay and other problems they have to put up with, staged a sickout that left hundreds buses in the parking lot and thousands of kids late to school last week.
The sickout ended Monday, and also ended with seven drivers - those who seemed to have been the leaders of the protesting bus drivers - being fired.
Superintendent Steve Green, in a letter Monday addressing the sickout, reiterated that his drivers are among some of the highest paid in metro Atlanta, and said progress is being made on a list of dozens of concerns, from overcrowded buses to massive potholes at bus depots, recently brought to his attention.
There are many reasons that the upset bus drivers hope that this protest against their work conditions will spark a wider movement.
