A 2-year-old Cobb County boy died after shooting himself with a semi-automatic handgun he found on a bed, Acworth police said Thursday.
Police were called around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday to a home on Athena Court, Officer Youlanda Leverette said. The boy died at the scene, Leverette said.
The boy’s father, Grant Dennington, and 4-year-old brother were also in the home at the time of the shooting. Neither was injured.
No information was released on who owned the gun or why it was left within reach of the toddler.
“Family members of the victim have been interviewed by detectives,” Leverette said in an emailed statement. “Several items were recovered from the scene which will be analyzed as part of the investigation.”
When the investigation is completed, detectives will meet with the Cobb County District Attorney’s office to determine if criminal charges will be filed in the shooting.
